About Department
The Department offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs in Zoology. Since its inception in the year 1957, the department has been at the forefront of biological research and education. Recognized as a DST-FIST (Fund for Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure in Higher Educational Institutions) sponsored department in 2008, it has been supported by the Star College Scheme of DBT since 2011.
The state-of-the-art laboratories are fully equipped to support practical training for students. The department hosts a faculty pool from multiple disciplines. The staff undertake major and minor research projects funded by the DBT, DST, MoEF, MoES, MHRD,TNSCST, UGC, etc. The Department promotes research culture among students, and try to create social bonding through outreach activities.
The committed faculty encourage, support and guide students to apply for student projects, summer training opportunities and internship programmes. Students are encouraged to apply and clear national-level exams like GATE, GAT-B, NET and others. The holistic development of students is ensured by engaging them in various curricular and extra-curricular activities. The Department has established Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with research institutions and laboratories to provide students with opportunities for hands-on training in advanced techniques and valuable internship experiences. Hence, equipping them with a strong foundation to pursue successful careers in Life sciences. The Department boasts an unique Zoological Museum in Tamil Nadu, with an exceptional collection of more than 2,000 preserved specimens, enriching experiential learning and scientific curiosity.

- To provide an educational environment that fosters the development of appropriate scientific vocabulary, reasoning skills, effective oral and written communication abilities for students.
