Chemistry Department

About Department

The Department of Chemistry was established in 1957 and has since evolved into a recognized centre for teaching and research. The department is approved to offer Ph.D. programmes alongside undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes under the self-financed stream. The M.Sc. Chemistry (Self-Financed) programme was introduced in 2003, followed by the launch of the B.Sc. Chemistry (Self-Financed) programme in 2017, reflecting the department’s commitment to expanding access to quality chemical education.

At present, the department is supported by a team of around ten well-qualified faculty members who actively engage in teaching, research, and academic outreach. The department caters to a vibrant student community, with approximately 110 students enrolled in the undergraduate programme and 50 students pursuing postgraduate studies. The department has established Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with reputed institutions and industries, including the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Chennai, and V-Guard, Cochin, fostering academic–industry collaboration and knowledge exchange. It also offers consultancy and analytical services using advanced instrumentation such as FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) Spectroscopy, UV–Visible Spectroscopy, water analysis facilities, and molecular modeling tools.

Faculty members are actively involved in international collaborative research and regularly deliver invited talks at national and international platforms. Research dissemination through paper presentations at international conferences, participation in research exchange programmes, and interdisciplinary collaborative projects form an integral part of the department’s academic culture. With a strong foundation in teaching, cutting-edge research, and industry interaction, the department continues to strive towards excellence in chemical sciences education and innovation.
