The Women’s Studies Centre (WSC) organized a hands-on training session on “Herbal Sanitary Pad Preparation” for the girl students on 01.08.2025. Four girl students from every department under both Aided and Self-Finance stream participated in this program. The initiative aimed to empower young women with sustainable menstrual health practices and eco-conscious entrepreneurship.
Mrs. R. Sribala, Director of the Centre, inaugurated the programme by welcoming the participants and stressing the value of eco-friendly hygiene solutions. Dr. C. Usha, Coordinator, Gender Studies, introduced the trainer, highlighting her commitment to promote sustainable alternatives through various environmental workshops, especially jute-based products. The session included 66 students, divided into 11 teams of six members each.
The expert commenced the session with a discussion on the harmful chemicals found in commercial sanitary pads, their health consequences—such as pelvic inflammation, hormonal imbalances, fertility issues—and their detrimental impact on waste management systems. During the session, students were made aware of the side effects of synthetic products and the benefits of herbal alternatives. Neem was emphasized for their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, while Aloe Vera was appreciated for its cooling and soothing qualities.
The students were guided to prepare the Herbal Sanitary pads. The session aligned with goals of environmental responsibility, public health, and self-reliant practices, reinforcing the importance of eco-conscious lifestyle changes.
Two sustainable products were taught:
Dr. G. Selvarakku, Co-ordinator of Gender Studies, proposed the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to the trainer, organizers, and participants for their active involvement and commitment to promoting sustainable health practices.
