Workshop on "Sakthi Unleash the Power for Self Defence"

The Women’s Studies Centre of Thiagarajar College, in association with Soroptimist International Madurai organized a program “Shakti-Unleash the Power” on 03.03.2022 in commemoration of International Women’s day Celebration. The chairperson, Women’s Studies Centre, Dr. Uma Kannan graced the occasion with her presence.
It was a workshop on basic self defence with an introduction to Theatre. The resource person was Ms. Sujatha Balakrishnan, Facilitator, Theatre of the oppressed of (trained at Boston) Bangalore. One hundred students from Certificate Course and Part V Gender Studies and students of I M. A. English participated in the program.
The Director Dr. V. Subathra Devi welcomed the gathering. In his presidential address, the Principal, Dr. D. Pandiaraja insisted on the importance of self-defense training for female students. Dr. Manju Anilkumar, President, Soroptimist International Madurai offered her felicitation and congratulated the students for their active participation in the event.
Ms. Anitha Rajarajan, Founder President, SI introduced the chief guest, and her credentials to the audience. Ms. Sujatha Balakrishnan set the ball of self-defense rolling with a demonstration. She taught the various techniques of defense against a perpetrator to a team of students with a request to teach the same to their friends. She also introduced the theatrical art to the students and made them demonstrate the nine rasa (emotions). The students enjoyed the program with a positive feedback. Dr. R. Angeline Chella Rajathi, Assistant Coordinator thanked the gathering. The program was appreciated by the students.
A Poster making contest was conducted for the students of all departments on the title “Shakti-Unleash the Power” Around 20 students actively participated in the contest and came out with an amazing presentation of the feminine power. The best posters were awarded by the members of Soroptimist International Madurai.
