The Women’s Studies Centre, Thiagarajar College, organized an extension activity titled “Swachhta Activity” to commemorate World Tourism Day, sponsored by India Tourism, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. The event took place on 27th September 2025 at the Gandhi Museum, Madurai.
The event emphasized the dual objectives of promoting tourism and spreading awareness about the importance of cleanliness. By aligning with the Sustainable Development Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities and Swachh Bharat initiative, the activity sought to highlight how maintaining hygiene at heritage and public places directly contributes to sustainable tourism.
Faculty, students, and organizers actively participated in the programme, engaging in discussions and hands-on efforts to reinforce the value of a clean environment in attracting visitors. Gloves and masks were distributed to all participants to ensure safety and hygiene during the process. The activity created a sense of collective responsibility among participants to protect cultural spaces and support eco-friendly practices.
The programme concluded with a sense of accomplishment, reinforcing the importance of cleanliness as a shared duty and an integral part of promoting India’s cultural and environmental heritage.
