seminar on Empowering Women in Tourism: Challenges and Opportunities

Women's Studies Centre of Thiagarajar College, Madurai in collaboration with India Tourism, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India organized two days state level seminar on Empowering Women in Tourism: Challenges and Opportunities.

The day began with a scenic drive towards Meghamalai.A short stop was made at Veerapandi for breakfast. Participants enjoyed the serene river view, taking in the peaceful ambiance and scenic beauty of the water body flanked by rural life.This location was noted as a potential eco-tourism spot where homestays, local guides, and women-led food stalls could thrive. Visit to Meghamalai: Upon arrival, participants were mesmerized by the picturesque landscape of Meghamalai – the lush green hills, mist-covered clouds, and pristine lake created an enchanting atmosphere. Meghamalai’s natural charm presented a clear opportunity for nature-based tourism. Discussions were initiated on how local women can be involved in hospitality services such as homestays, guided nature walks, and the sale of eco-friendly handicrafts.

The farmer conducted an informative session on grape cultivation:Explained modern and traditional agricultural techniques used in grape farming.Described cultivar varieties of grapes, including their growing conditions and harvesting periods.Shared experiences in marketing and distribution, highlighting challenges like price fluctuations, logistics, and middlemen. The session shed light on potential agri-tourism initiatives, where women could be trained in grape processing (juices, jams, dried grapes), packaging, and local marketing.

Visit to Flat Beans and Bitter Gourd Plantations: The day continued with a visit to vegetable plantations where flat beans and bitter gourd were being cultivated. The farmer elaborated on cultivation methods, including land preparation, seed varieties, irrigation, and pest control.Investment and capital requirements, highlighting the profit margins and seasonal trends. This offered a perspective on how women entrepreneurs could engage in small-scale vegetable farming, possibly integrating it with tourism by offering farm tours or farm-to-table experiences.

On the second day the seminar started with the lighting of the traditional Kuthuvilakku, symbolizing the inauguration of the seminar. Welcome Address was delivered by Dr. R. Aruna, who set the context for the seminar. Presidential Address: Given by Dr. Uma Kannan delivered an insightful talk on cultural tourism and the significance of Madurai's rich heritage. She emphasized the city's historical, architectural, and cultural relevance, highlighting how traditions and local identity play a crucial role in attracting cultural tourists.Dr. G. Vasudevan, Managing Director of Fortune Pandyan Hotel, discussed gender stereotypes in the tourism and hospitality industry.Mr. S. M. Balamurugan, Tourism Officer from Tiruchirappalli, spoke about the future prospects for women in the tourism sector.

Inaugural Address was delivered virtually by Mr. D. Venkatesan, Regional Director, India Tourism, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. He emphasized government support and digital initiatives for women in tourism industry. An on-campus event promoting cleanliness and sustainable tourism was organized. It aimed to raise awareness among students about the importance of maintaining hygiene at tourist destinations.

Dr. R. Aruna conducted a session on the Incredible India Tourist Facilitator Certification Program. Explained the course structure and its importance. Highlighted the career opportunities it can provide, especially for aspiring women entrepreneurs in tourism. The Valedictory Address was delivered by Dr. D. Pandiaraja, who outlined practical steps and policy suggestions to promote women’s participation in tourism. A total of 69 students from Thiagarajar College, Thiagarajar College of Engineering and National College, Tiruchirappalli participated in the seminar. Dr. R. Aruna, Director, WSC expressed gratitude to India Tourism for sponsoring the seminar and supporting efforts toward women’s empowerment in tourism industry.
