Extension Activity for Visually Challenged Students

on 29.08.2025

The Women’s Studies Centre of Thiagarajar College organized an extension activity at the Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Madurai. The program based Sustainable Development Goal – 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and also aimed to create awareness as well as introduce visually challenged students to assistive devices and resources that support independence.

The session began with Mr. Shankar, who highlighted how differently abled individuals, especially those with visual impairment, excel in diverse fields. He cited the example of a B.Com student who consistently tops her class and introduced Mr. Sasi, an alumnus of Thiagarajar College, now a successful professional heading a software company, who began his journey through education in literature.

Following this, Ms. Flora shared insights about the Composite Regional Centre (CRC), which serves as a bridge to ensure government facilities reach persons with disabilities. She emphasized its initiatives on skill development, employment training, and appropriate job placement for differently abled people.

As main part of the programme, assistive devices, including Saarth Smart MobilityDevice, Jyoti AI Pro Smart Glasses and Walking Sticks worth Rs. 30,000 were distributed to the participants. A demonstration was given on their use, and students were encouraged to walk independently with the device, gaining confidence in mobility.

The alumnus highlighted the benefits of AI-powered glasses, emphasizing that the mobile application itself can describe environments, scan text, and read it aloud, but when integrated with the device, the features become more advanced. He guided students step-by-step on how to use the app effectively.

The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. R. Aruna, Director, WSC, who encouraged students to make full use of the assistive devices provided.
