As a part of the International Women’s Day celebrations, the Women’s Studies Centre (WSC) organized an extension activity titled “Herbal Plants for Daily Life” at Veppadappu, one of its adopted villages in Madurai. The programme aimed to raise awareness among rural communities, especially women, about the importance and practical use of medicinal herbs in everyday healthcare.

The event began with a warm welcome by Mrs. R. Sribala, Director of WSC, who outlined the objectives of the programme and introduced the resource person, Dr. R. Aruna, Assistant Professor of Botany, Thiagarajar College.

In her special lecture, Dr. Aruna highlighted the significant health benefits of using herbal products in daily life. A display of various commonly found medicinal herbs accompanied her talk, which focused on specific plants beneficial for skin care, pain relief during puberty and menopause, cancer prevention, and general health issues. She encouraged participants to explore natural remedies for common ailments such as cold, fever, and digestive problems, stressing that these herbs are not only effective but also safe and affordable.

The session was highly interactive, with enthusiastic participation from the local community. Participants expressed appreciation for the practical knowledge shared and gained valuable insights into cultivating and utilizing herbal plants in their daily lives.

The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Dr. G. Selvarakku, Coordinator of Gender Studies.
