Extension Activity - Skill development program on “Honey Bee Keeping”

     In commemoration of International Women’s Day, the Women’s Studies Centre (WSC) organized an extension activity focused on skill development in “Honey Bee Keeping” at Veppadappu, one of its adopted villages in Madurai. The initiative aimed to promote entrepreneurship and self-reliance among rural women by equipping them with practical and sustainable livelihood skills.      

     Mrs. R. Sribala, Director of WSC, welcomed the participants and introduced the resource persons. In her address, she highlighted the importance of empowering women through hands-on training and practical knowledge to enhance their economic independence and self-sufficiency.      

     Dr. M. Viji, Assistant Professor of Botany, Thiagarajar College, provided an insightful introduction to the fundamentals of beekeeping. She discussed various bee species, their suitability for cultivation, and the medicinal value of honey. Dr. Viji emphasized beekeeping as a viable, eco-friendly livelihood option with significant health and economic benefits.      

     Mr. K. Nagarajan, Training Officer at Vibis Natural Honey, Madurai, conducted a hands-on demonstration using a portable honey bee box. He explained the formation of honeycombs, the therapeutic benefits of honey and bee stings, and practical techniques for colony maintenance. His session focused on enhancing productivity and profitability through sustainable practices. The interactive nature of the sessions ensured active participation, providing valuable insights into sustainable beekeeping. The event successfully combined environmental awareness with entrepreneurship, inspiring rural women to explore new avenues for personal and professional growth.      

     Dr. D. Sasi Devi, Assistant Programme Coordinator of WSC, proposed the vote of thanks for the event.      

     This initiative is part of WSC’s ongoing commitment to uplifting women through education, skill development, and community engagement.
