Awareness Program on “Exploring the Self within with Meditation Experience”

on 26.12.2024

The Women’s Studies Centre organized an awareness program titled “Exploring the Self Within with Meditation Experience,” aimed at promoting mental well-being through meditation, with B. K. Rani, M.Sc in yoga, Value Education & Spirituality, as the resource person. Dr. D. Sasi Devi, Assistant Program Coordinator, WSC, welcomed the gathering and emphasized the importance of meditation for maintaining mental health at any age. Dr. M. Viji, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany introduced the chief guest.

The session commenced with a thought-provoking question about meditation and silence, followed by a detailed discussion of eight types of silence, categorized into positive and negative silence. For each type, the resource person shared relevant real-life examples to help students understand their significance and impact on life.

Positive silence includes Divine Silence, which encourages spiritual growth, Deep Silence, leading to inner calm and clarity, Discipline Silence, involving regular quiet reflection to build focus, and Sweet Silence, promoting relaxation and contentment. Negative silence encompasses Danger Silence, signaling discomfort or unease, Dry Silence, marked by emotional coldness, Dead Silence, which creates heaviness and shock, and Design Silence, intentionally created to enhance concentration and focus.

Following the discussion, a brief activity was conducted where participants were asked to clear their minds for two minutes and then share the thoughts that came to mind. Based on their responses, the resource person explained which type of thought process they were experiencing.

Next, a warm-up activity was held, followed by a practical meditation session. Participants were guided through a meditation exercise while focusing on a light and listening to a calming narration accompanied by soft music. This activity was designed to promote inner calm and mindfulness.

At the end of the meditation practice, several students expressed their intention to incorporate meditation into their daily routines, reflecting the positive impact of the session.

Dr. G. Selvarakku, Coordinator, Gender Studies, concluded the program by proposing the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude for the enlightening session and for the participants' active participation.
