A Special Lecture on “Crime against Women in India”

on 09.12.2024

In commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women -2024, the Women's Studies Centre organized a special lecture titled "Crime Against Women in India". Mrs. R. Sribala, Director, WSC welcomed the chief guest Advocate K.Samidurai, State President, Indian Association of Lawyers and introduced the theme of the program, "Every 10 Minutes, a Woman is Killed: #No Excuse. Unite to End Violence Against Women."

Advocate K. Samidurai began the lecture highlighting the seriousness of sexual harassment worldwide. He discussed how the Nirbhaya case led to significant legal reforms, particularly strengthening punishments and laws for major crimes against women. These changes have ensured greater accountability and stricter enforcement in addressing such offenses.

He explained three common crimes against women. First is about acid attacks, for which the punishment is life imprisonment and victims receive compensation within 15 days. For attempts, the penalty is seven years of imprisonment. Second was stalking, which includes both following someone physically and watching them on social media, with strict punishments under law. Third was eve-teasing, which often leads to more serious crimes and needs stricter handling.

Discussed newer crimes like voyeurism and shared details about government programs that help victims. Real-life examples were given, such as a 71-year-old woman in France who fought for justice, proving age is not a barrier to pursuing justice. Another example was of a working woman who faced violence after opposing a child marriage, emphasizing the significance of the POSH Act in protecting women’s rights in workplaces.

The session emphasized the importance of reporting violence without fear and challenged the societal norms that perpetuate such crimes. During the interactive Q&A segment, participants shared feedback and raised questions about false accusations and violence against men. Advocate K.Samidurai addressed these with thoughtful responses, using real-life incidents to provide clarity and helping students understand the complexities of these topics. Also encouraged everyone to recognize the issues of violence and not to ignore it when it happens.

The lecture concluded with a convincing note for collective action to combat gender-based violence, leaving the audience motivated to stand united against such injustices.

Dr. R. Aruna, Programme coordinator, WSC proposed the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the speaker and participants for their active engagement in this impactful event.
