on 10.10.2024

In view of International Girl Child Day, the Women's Studies Centre organized an awareness program on "Cyber Crime-Issues and Challenges" on 10.10.2024 at Dr.Radha Thiagarajan Auditorium. Mrs. R.Sribala, Director, WSC welcomed the gathering and highlighted the theme of the day.

Mr. Selvakuamar, Inspector of Police, Mr. Raja, Sub Inspector of Police and Mr. Sathish Kumar, Technical SI, Cybersecurity Crime, Madurai City delivered a compelling lecture on cyber crime issues and challenges. They created hyper awareness on the dangers of using social media without two-factor authentication and screen or fingerprint locks, and highlighted the adverse side of the widely used App- Telegram. They advised students not to record private videos and photos and to be cautious when choosing friends online, urging them to report any issues, even if they seem small.

Mr. Selvakuamar, pointed out that among the 21 cyber crime issues, the two most important and sensitive are child pornography and cyber crimes against women. He explained how the UNO monitors these crimes globally and emphasizes severe punishment for those who share the content. Students were urged to report instances of child pornography immediately. They were made aware of how Telegram is used for data theft.

The speakers sensitized the legal protection such as Sections 67A and 67B of the IT Act, which help protect women against cyber crimes. Students were taught to identify secure websites (noted by "https://") and to be wary of unnecessary OTP requests, which can indicate identity theft. The discussion also included awareness of loan applications that initially promise low interest but later exploit individuals, including hacking their phones.

Mr. Sathish Kumar highlighted the technical aspects, including issues like chat applications that encourage secrecy, leading students to hide information from their families. He addressed online harassment, cyber bullying, stalking, sexting, revenge porn, digital voyeurism, investment fraud and provided practical solutions such as reporting through the official website, www.cybercrime.gov.in, which allows for anonymous reporting.

Additional resources mentioned include Sanchar Saathi for mobile theft, the Kaaval Uthavi app for women in danger situation, and the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NGO) which runs against child pornography issues. Students were informed about the toll-free number 1930 for reporting cyber crime issues.

Mr.Raja interacted with students in an engaging manner, sharing real-life stories and cases about practical problems faced by women all over the world and its solutions. He ended his talk with a suitable Thirukkural that highlights the value of a woman's virtue- no external protection is as powerful as her own chastity, which serves as her ultimate safeguard.

Dr. C. Usha, Coordinator, Gender studies proposed the Vote of Thanks.
