World Suicide Prevention Day Awareness program on " Mind over Matters: Psychology of Everyday Living "

In view of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Women's Studies Centre organized an awareness program on " Mind over Matters: Psychology of Everyday Living ".
Mrs. R.Sribala, Director, WSC delievered the Welcome Address and highlighted the triennial theme “Changing the narrative on Suicide " declared by International Association for Suicide Prevention in conjunction with WHO.
The resource person, Ms. A. Muhil, Psychologist and Psychotherapist, Ahana Hospital delivered a compelling lecture titled "Mind Over Matters: Psychology of Everyday Living." Her session focused on the significance of treating mental health with the same seriousness as physical health. Highlighted the crucial need for seeking professional help for mental health issues and addressed the stigma associated with it.
Discussed the psychosomatic symptoms arising from mental illness. The causes of suicidal thoughts are explained and suggested practical interventions. She encouraged students to identify three trustworthy individuals with whom they can share their feelings without fear of judgment.
Practical advice was provided on how to support family and friends dealing with mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression. Also taught students on recognizing signs of self-harming behavior and the importance of urging individuals to seek professional help.
The session included interactive games designed to make the learning process engaging and relatable for the students. The students from various Departments enthusiastically participated and interacted in the program.
The lecture concluded with a poignant short story about a boy and starfish emphasizing the value of helping at least one person, even if one cannot help everyone. The story highlighted the mutual satisfaction derived from making a positive difference in someone’s life. Dr. R.Aruna, Programme coordinator, WSC proposed the vote of thanks.
