The Centre organized an awareness programme on “Stop the Violence Against Women” on 10.12.2019. Dr. Uma Kannan, Vice President and Chairperson of Women’s Studies Centre graced the occasion and delivered the Presidential address. She highlighted the universally observed celebration of women, “Orange the World Campaign” which uses orange as the unifying colour throughout all its activities. It is the symbol of a brighter future, free from violence against women and girls. Together with activities around the world, we are using the colour orange to call attention to the various forms of violence that prevent women and girls from reaching their full potential. Violence against women not only denies women and girls their rights, health and opportunities, but undermines all development effort.
The chief guest, r. Davidson Deva Asirvadham, Commissioner of Police, Madurai City was the cynosure of the event. He stole the show with his thought provoking appeal to the students to empower themselves physically and mentally and tide over their challenges smoothly. He introduced the Kavalan app designed by the Tamilnadu police to offer emergency aid when in danger. He explained that with the click of a button in their mobile, the police would be alerted and would reach the spot in no time. This news created a sensation among the students. He responded warmly to all the queries of the students in the interactive session. The media coverage for the programme was excellent.
Dr. V. Subathra Devi, Director, Women’s Studies Centre welcomed the gathering. Dr. D. Pandiaraja, Principal. Thiagarajar College, felicitated the occasion. Dr. S. S. Kavitha, Assistant Professor of English delivered the vote of thanks. Around 500 students of both genders participated in the event.
