Violence Against Women and girls is one of the most wide spread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today and a threat to millions of girls and women, offline and online. The Women’s Studies Centre at Thiagarajar College organized “Orange the World Campaign” as an Extension Programme at Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Govt Girls High School, Teppakulam, Madurai. Dr. V. Subathra Devi, Director, Women’s Studies Centre, addressed the students and highlighted the colour orange symbolizing a bright future, free of violence. She explained how women and girls are affected regardless of their age, background, or level of education. This violence takes many forms, including physical, sexual or psychological violence, as well as economic abuse and exploitation. Dr. I. Chitra, Coordinator, Women’s Studies Centre demonstrated the reason & causes of violence against women with a short film .
Dr. S. S. Kavitha, Assistant Professor of English spoke on how the young girls should protect themselves from the social media. Ms. K. Gangadevi, Coordinator, Part V Gender Studies focussed on the issue of rape as a specific form of harm committed against women & girls and said that World Health Organization is calling for more actions to prevent and end violence against women. Around 165 students participated in the extension programme & clarified their doubts regarding social violence against women. The students and teachers of the school found the programme the need of the hour.
