      A National Seminar on “Gender Challenges in Smart Cities: Interventions and Innovations through Cyberspace and ICT” was organized by Women’s Studies Centre, Thiagarajar College on 29.03.2017. Dr. M. Eyini, Principal (Director, Women’s Studies Centre) welcomed the gathering in the Inaugural Session.

Mrs. Visalakshi Kannan, Founder and CEO, Raman Technologies, Washington, D.C., USA graced the occasion and delivered the Presidential Address on “What makes a country a super power”. She highlighted how the two major happiest countries in the world, Norway and Bhutan sustain their happiness through their people’s attitude apart from its rich natural resources and technological development. She concluded that, “To make a smart city a happy city, the attitude of the people has to be changed positively”. Mrs. Visalakshi released the abstract of the seminar and Dr. Payal Mago, Member, UGC Women’s Studies Division and Shaheed Rajguru Principal, College of Applied Sciences for Women, New Delhi received it. Dr. S. Kasi, Assistant Professor in Economics, Thiagarajar College, Madurai proposed the vote of thanks.      

     Dr. Payal Mago spoke on “Smart Women in Smart City Environment”. In her interesting and thought provoking speech she highlighted the need for Women Empowerment in Smart Cities. Ar. G. Balaji, Associate Professor in Architecture, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai spoke on “Skills Gap in a Smart City” and listed out the opportunities available for youth in a smart city and how they can be groomed and trained in the skill sets required.     

Dr. D. Pandiaraja, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Mathematics, chaired the paper presentation session. 72 papers were presented by students, staff and various NGO representatives from different parts of the state.

Dr. A. Suganthi, Dean, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Chemistry, Thiagarajar College, Madurai gave the welcome address for the valedictory session. Ms. Bimla Chandrasekar, Director, EKTA Resource Centre for Women, Madurai delivered the valedictory address. Mrs. K. Praveena, Lecturer, Department of Economics, proposed the vote of thanks.
