Awareness Programme on “Emotional Intelligence for Empowered Young Women” for The Inmates of Manimeghalai Illam

on 13.10.2025

The Women’s Studies Centre, Thiagarajar College, organised an awareness programme titled “Emotional Intelligence for Empowered Young Women” for the inmates of Manimeghalai Illam. The session aimed to enhance emotional awareness, resilience, and self-understanding among young women, empowering them to lead balanced and confident lives.

Dr. R. Aruna, Director, Women’s Studies Centre, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the importance of emotional intelligence in personal growth, social relationships, and leadership. She also presented a memento to the Chief Guest, Ms. A. Muhil, Psychologist and Psychotherapist, Ahana Hospital, Madurai as a token of appreciation.

The session commenced with an insightful talk by Ms. A. Muhil, Psychologist and Psychotherapist, Ahana Hospital, Madurai, who highlighted the significance of understanding and managing emotions effectively. She explained how emotional intelligence plays a vital role in shaping one’s behavior, building strong relationships, and coping with life’s challenges. The speaker discussed the core components of emotional intelligence — self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills — illustrating each with real-life examples relevant to young women.

Ms. A Muhil encouraged participants to recognize their emotions without judgment, respond mindfully rather than react impulsively, and practice empathy in daily interactions. She shared simple strategies such as journaling, positive self-talk, and reflective listening to strengthen emotional resilience and mental well-being.

The session was highly interactive, with students actively engaging through questions and sharing personal experiences. The discussion also touched upon managing stress, dealing with peer pressure, and maintaining mental health during challenging times.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. G. Selvarakku, Coordinator, Gender Studies, who appreciated the valuable insights shared by the resource person and encouraged the participants to apply emotional intelligence skills in their everyday lives to become more confident and empowered individuals.
